Why Custom? |

Frequently I am asked, "Will a custom rod catch more fish?" I always answer, "Absolutely!" But, it has more to do with the angler than the rod that I, or another custom rod builder, made for them. You have the confidence in knowing that: · The rod was built specifically for you and your fishing style and preferences · Only the best in hand selected components were used to build your fishing rod · Your rod was built by someone who enjoys and is dedicated to the art of rod building · Past experiences with rod building and working with other anglers is used in the design and construction of your rod · Time was taken to ensure the rod delivers optimum performance · The person who built your rod is also an angler that uses the same components
There is absolutely nothing like making a perfect cast, hooking and landing a fish on a rod that was custom built for you - to your specifications, desires and requirements that match your particular fishing style. Ask a golfer if there is a difference between a set of clubs off the shelf or having a set custom fit? Fishing rods are no different (except typically less expensive). Most fishing rods that you find in the stores are built and assembled in minutes - YES - minutes. This is not to say there is anything wrong with these rods or the quality of the process. There are a lot of fine mass-produced rods on the market that will provide a very cost effective product and meet the needs of the "average" angler. But, think about it for a minute - who is the average angler? When I am on the water I see little girls fishing with their Grandfathers along with all ages in between from both genders. So, who is the average angler? I do not believe there is an "average angler". Each one of us are unique
Psalm 139:13-15 (New International Version) 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. We each have different size hands, arm lengths, casting styles, and other physical and mental attributes given to us by our Creator that affect how the rod is cast, the lure presented and retrieved. So, how does the executive sitting in an office at the "xyz Fishing Rod Company" who is focused on "making the numbers", know what a mother and her 8-year old son need in their fishing rod? Physically, there are obvious differences in hand sizes between the Mom and Son, but there are other, just as crucial differences, as well. Whether us guys want to admit it or not, it's true - women are much more patient. Mom is probably good at finesse fishing - taking 10 minutes to pull a weightless rigged worm across the bottom at quite literally a snail's pace. While her son may like to throw a big crank - going for hang time and distance - out as far as he can. In most cases, not all, the executive doesn't know or understand the needs. Instead their "xyz Fishing Rod Company" offers a product they feel meets the needs of both the Mom and the Son - along with a few million other people - from a vast market survey. The rod does a few things well for both of them and meets their basic needs. But, it does nothing great. How much more enjoyable would the fishing experience be if both Mom and Son had a fishing rod that was built and setup to optimize the type and performance of their preferred fishing style? A custom fishing rod will deliver what both are looking for AND take the fishing experience to a whole new level. I am a firm believer in that you are only as good as your tools. When you are on the water with the confidence of knowing that your fishing rod was properly built for you, to your specifications and fishing style, that confidence will show in how you use it. That confidence alone will allow the angler to land more fish. Add in the fact that the rod they are using has been built from quality components that are optimized to a specific fishing style and integrated so that a greater degree of accuracy can be achieved, this gives the angler the ability to apply the right presentation. Remember, there is a VERY good reason that a $20 fishing rod costs $20. Ok, the fish is hooked. Now what? A custom fishing rod will provide a tremendous advantage for fighting and landing (more) fish. The rod has been constructed for optimal performance AND strength. By using the inherent characteristics of the blank spine, maximum force can be applied to control the fish. With proper control applied during the fight, The risk of “break-offs” are greatly reduced which means more fish are landed! A rod constructed for fishing patterns such as lily pads, milfoil or trees will provide the angler the confidence to pull that monster out of the thickest salad or stickups. |
