Below are some of the most frequent questions I get—and some really good ones at that. Hopefully they will be helpful and will answer some of your questions related to custom fishing rods and tackle. What kind of fishing rods do you make? Everything. Fly, casting, spinning, surf, pier, trolling, etc. for fresh and saltwater. How long does it take to complete my rod? Depending upon what I have in process it is usually a week or two to get started on a new rod. That’s OK though as it will take us a while to get all the right questions answered and what you are looking for in a rod. Once I get started it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks to complete a “typical” rod. So all total it could be up to 6 weeks before the rod is delivered. Additional customizations such as thread art and marbling might add an additional week. Does this same time frame apply to Outcast Fishing Rods™ as well? No. In stock rods will ship next business day. Out of stock rods will ship within 5 to 10 business days. Do you offer a “try and buy” program? Kind of. All rods, spec and custom builds, include a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you take your rod and do not like it, contact me to see what can be done. I will take it back and start working on a new one with you with all monies applied to the new build. Or, will return ALL money paid once the rod is received back. I also have a loaner and demo program that allows you to try various rods and configurations (split grips, spiral wraps, micros, etc.) before we start designing and building your rod. Do you have loaners for trying out? Yes. Please see the Loaners and Demo page for more information. Do I really need a “hi-tech” rod for everything I want to use just to catch a bass or a crappie!?! This all seems to be very complex for just a string, hook and worm to catch a fish. This seems more complex than golf! No. You ABSOLUTELY do not need a rod for every technique and application. Just like playing golf, you don’t need to carry 14 clubs to be good at it, but, you might want to have more than just a putter in your bag. Do you really believe all that stuff in the Bible? Isn’t it just more mythology? First question, Yes, I believe the Bible to be the inherent word of good. I believe God sent his son to this earth to pay the price for our sins so that we can have fellowship with God himself. Answer to the second question, NO. As the world turns it back to God the term “myth” and “mythology” has evolved to where it would seem to include the Christian Faith, but, it is not the same. Myths were intended to describe historical events and folklore that described or brought meaning to events. Myths almost always point back to man, a people or a nation. The Bible points to God’s son Jesus. From the opening book, Genesis, the stage is set for the coming of Christ and this theme carries through out the Bible. How much should I plan on spending for a custom rod? A good, solid rod by a reputable blank manufacturer (Lamiglas, St. Croix, American Tackle, Batson, Orvis, etc.) with good components will typically go around $200 to 250. I sometimes have a good inventory of blanks that I have picked up for a considerable discount and have access to a good selection of OEM blanks that can be built on for around $150. Premium technique specific high-end blanks by leading manufacturers such as North Fork Composites (G. Loomis’ new line), St. Croix, Lamiglas, Batson, Sage, etc., will typically start at around $250. Premium builds will typically include high-end components such as Titanium guides and tops, custom shaped grips and metal winding checks. Let me know you interests and we will spec a rod with a detailed estimated cost-no obligation to buy. We will then go from there to get into the price range or setup you want. I have never had a custom fishing rod built before and not sure how to begin or start. Do you mind a bunch of questions? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Part of what I enjoy about rod building is helping you design and customize the rod you want. Questions are always welcomed and encouraged. I try to reply to all email and calls within 24 hours. Why did you start Outcast Fishing Rods™? I wanted to be able to offer affordable high-quality rods to a broader range of folks who enjoy fishing. Having built custom rods for several years now I occasionally run into folks who want a good high quality rod but do not want to go through the process of spec’ing, designing and the WAITING for the build to be completed and shipped—they know what they want and they want/need it now. What shortcuts are taken on the Outcast Fishing Rods™ as compared to the custom builds? None. The only difference in the Outcast rods and customs is that the process of spec’ing components and designing is removed. Outcast Fishing Rods are built to standard build configurations but the build process is the same as for that as customs. Each rod is stress and deflection tested for guide placement and high quality components are used. What’s the difference between the rods on the Rods For Sale page and your custom rods? To be totally honest—not a whole lot from a technical perspective. The same techniques, processes and quality are used on the spec builds as that on the custom builds—with the exception of high-end builds that will use the best premium components and blanks available. The biggest difference is that custom built rods are done for a specific person matching their specific requirements, needs and exact specifications. Spec built rods are built towards a particular application and/or technique with very general characteristics for handle lengths, materials, colors, guides, etc. Custom built rods are built at the time of order to the customer’s specifications and requirements—handle lengths, weights, lure, colors, guides and anything else the customer desires. Custom built rods are personalized with the owners name or other messages. Do you repair fishing rods? Yes. Please check the Repairs and Services page for maintenance and rates. Do you repair and work on fishing reels? No—not anymore. I use to repair reels, but, I choose now to focus on my craft of building custom fishing rods. How long do repairs take? Fairly simple repairs to guides and tip-tops can usually be done in a week. Extensive repairs such as replacing cork, reel seats, grips, etc. can take up to two weeks to repair. I will let you know when to expect to get your rod back at the time of drop off. Can repairs be expedited? Yes. For an additional cost and if I have the parts on site. When do I have to pay for my rod? To get started on your custom rod, a minimum of half of the costs must be paid up front. The balance is due within 30 days after receiving your rod. Can I have an image or picture put on my rod? Yes. As long as it is not copyright protected and not offensive. Depending upon the image, additional charges could be required, usually between $8 to $20. Do you do spiral wraps? Yes. By request at no additional cost. The type of spiral, typically either “simple”, “revolver”, or “house favorite” will be decided during design. Do you use micro guides? Yes. I am a firm believer in sizing the smallest and lightest guide to match the technique and application. As we talk through and discuss your rod we will see what size guides makes the most sense for your particular application. Overwhelming majority of my freshwater builds have #4.5 or #4 single foot fly guides for the running guides. I typically do not build smaller than a #3 micro guide. Why do some of your micro guide rods have a large tip-top on them? Typically for a micro-guide build I will not go any smaller than a #4 tip top (however, keep in mind anything smaller than a #6 is considered micro). This is totally dependant upon the line type and size that is to be used. If a heavy, say 15 lb or higher, mono, copolymer, or fluorocarbon line is to be used it cold potentially cause problems as it passes through tip top rings that are smaller than a #5. This is due to the stiffness of the line and bending as it comes out of the guides and exits the tip top. Where the line bends it will cause some constriction in the tip-top ring. This will also cause the line to rub against the blank as well. This effects casting and retrieval. Now, if the rod is a light, or ultra light, and will never go above 10 lb line, I have no problem matching the micro guides and tip top. Do you accept Personal Checks? Yes. Do you accept Credit Cards? No. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, personal checks and PayPal. Do you accept PayPal? Yes. As well as personal checks. Payments made via PayPal are to be made to eddie@weavercraftfishing.com. Can I come by and pickup my rod once it is done? Yes. We will work together to arrange a suitable pickup time and location around the Chapel Hill or Durham area. There are no shipping or delivery charges. Are you willing to meet for delivery? Yes. I am willing to drive and meet “half way” for deliveries up to 100 miles from Chapel Hill, NC. A delivery charge of $10 will be added. We will work together to arrange a suitable pickup time and location. If I buy the parts and send them to you will you build a rod for me? Yes. However, this will typically cost you more as you will pay for shipping twice—once to ship to me and when I ship the finished rod back to you. The best option is to let me get the components, build and ship to you. I work with all major rod building suppliers and can get about anything on the market. Can you order the reel for me and install? Yes. Will order string and load it on as well if you like. This is the desired situation when building a custom rod—especially for spinning rods—to build the rod with the reel that will be used. I can order the reel, line and install ready for you. There is no additional charge for this and you pay only for the costs of the reel, line and any applicable taxes and shipping. Or, you may order it yourself and have shipped directly to me—OK either way. I want to give a custom rod as a gift but unsure what to get. Do you have gift certificates available? Yes. I know there is nothing like giving the actual gift, but if we cannot decide upon the right setup I can provide a rough estimate and provide a gift certificate to you. Please note that a gift certificate must be paid in full. Any money that is not used will be returned to you, or, the gift recipient if you chose. Does WeaverCraft Custom Fishing Tackle offer sponsorships? Yes. However, these are limited. All inquiries are welcome and will be evaluated. Does WeaverCraft Custom Fishing Tackle provide rods for charity events (auctions, raffles, etc.)? Yes. All inquiries are welcome and will be evaluated based upon current business practices and if the event or charity aligns with the vision, goals and principles on which I have for WeaverCraft Custom Fishing Tackle. Do you accept returns? Absolutely—100% Satisfaction is my goal. There are (2) options should you wish to return your rod that must be done within the first 30 days of delivery: 1. Contact me to discuss a suitable replacement, or, 2. Return the rod within 30 days of delivery. Please see the Warranty Page for further information on returns and exchanges. Do you ship rods? If so, how much is shipping? I ship rods all over the USA (and Canada, contact me for rates). Shipping in the continental US is $20 for rods up to 7’. All rods are insured for the full purchase price. Rods are shipped in a rod sock and packed securely in a PVC pipe so as to provide protection and shock absorption. The pipe is labeled as “fragile” and noted as to not be belted as part of transport. Every effort is made to ensure your rod is fully protected during shipment.
